Bhubaneswar, May 19 (PTI): The 147-member Odisha Assembly will have at least 76 crorepatis this time, more than twice the number the 2009 elections had sent to the House, a report by the Odisha Election Watch said.
The outgoing House had 32 crorepatis.
Sixty-two (53 per cent) of the 117 winners from the BJD, nine (56 per cent) of the 16 Congress legislators and four (40 per cent) of the 10 BJP MLAs are crorepatis, said Ranjan Mohanty, the state coordinator of the OEW.
On average, the assets of the 147 winners work out to Rs 3.22 crore — Rs 2.03 crore for the 117 BJD MLAs, Rs 13.44 crore for the 10 BJP legislators, and Rs 1.92 crore for the 16 Congress MLAs, the report said.
The top three winners with the highest declared assets are the BJP’s Dilip Kumar Ray from Rourkela (Rs 106 crore), Independent Sanatan Mahakud from Champua (Rs 69 crore) and the BJP’s Nitesh Gangadeb from Deogarh (Rs 17 crore).
Three winners with the lowest declared assets are all from the BJD. They are Priyanshu Pradhan from Chhatrapur (Rs 2.76 lakh), Basanti Mallick from Mohana (Rs 3 lakh) and Ramesh Patua (Rs 3 lakh) from Rengali.
At least 52 (35 per cent) of the winners have declared criminal cases against them, the report said.
Mohanty said 32 (27 per cent) of the 117 winners from the BJD have declared criminal cases against them. Nine of the 16 legislators from the Congress and eight of the 10 from the BJP have declared criminal cases in their affidavits.
