Fire engulfs garment shop

A fire broke out at a four-storey garment showroom in the densely populated and congested city centre market in Sector IV of Bokaro steel city in the small hours of Monday.

It took 10 fire tenders nine hours to douse the flames, but dense smoke continued to billow out of the gutted top floor of the shop till late in the morning. However, there was no casualty.

Police said the blaze was detected at the ground floor of Khubsoorat around 2am. It flared up and gradually spread to the first and second floor and thus engulfing the entire building.

Eyewitnesses said as soon as the fire was spotted, dozens of shopkeepers, who sleep on the nearby lanes, rushed to the spot and tried their best to douse the blaze by pouring water and sand.

North Chotanagpur inspector-general Laxman Singh and Bokaro superintendent of police Jitendra Singh rushed to the spot around 9am.

The duo has ordered an inquiry.

One of the partners of the showroom P.N. Gupta said they were yet to ascertain the loss incurred.
