Sammy is SH captain

Calcutta: Sunrisers Hyderabad, on Sunday, replaced Shikhar Dhawan with Darren Sammy as the captain of the team. With the tournament entering the business end, Sunrisers want Dhawan to concentrate only on his batting.

“We are expecting a lot from Dhawan as a batsman. We want him only to concentrate on his batting and nothing else. We don’t want him to take the extra responsibility of leading the side.

“Even off the field, a captain needs to take care of different things… So the decision,” team mentor VVS Laxman said before Sunday’s match.

Laxman hopes Dhawan to play the lead role in the team’s endeavour to make it to the play-offs. “He is our key batsman and our batting depends a lot on him.

“After the Kolkata Knight Riders’ match, we have three more matches to play. If we want to qualify for the play-offs, we need to win all of them. For that, we need Dhawan to lead the onslaught.”

Sammy was recently removed as the West Indies Test captain.

Though T20 is a different format altogether, the move to anoint him with Sunrisers’ captaincy is definitely an interesting one.
