Minister refutes MP slur

Silchar, May 17: Sushmita Dev, the newly-elected Congress MP from Silchar, has accused a state minister and his aides of trying to sabotage her prospects at the hustings.

Dev, a lawyer and first-time MLA, won the election by a margin of 35,276 votes against BJP’s Kabindra Purkayastha, a former Union minister, who had won the seat three times. While Dev polled 3,36,426 votes, Purkayastha secured 3,01,159 votes.

She hinted at the alleged involvement of state minister and a Congress strongman in the Barak Valley, Gautam Roy.

She said she would seek a probe against the minister before the party high command.

Roy refuted the allegation and said that her remark was “very unfortunate” and it smacked of her “mania against him”.

He said Himanta Biswa Sharma had proposed his name as the party candidate for Silchar seat, but he had flatly refused this offer.

He said he did not campaign in her favour as he was busy campaigning for the party candidate in Karimganj Lok Sabha seat.
