Shanker Singh in top spot

Imphal, May 15: Eighth seed Y. Shanker Singh upstaged second seed S. Premjit Singh to occupy the top slot with 5.5 points in the 19th Y. Nilamani Chess Tournament, 2014 organised by Singjamei Chess Club, Imphal West.

The sixth round saw ninth seed L. Koireng Singh getting the better of fourth seed O. Ningthem to share the lead with 5.5 points.

With a round left in the tournament on Sunday, first seed Rk. Bhogen came up with a much-needed victory, defeating N. Bangkin for five points.

Second seed S. Premjit Singh, O. Ningthem Singh, E. Sashikanta, Mahesh Power, G. Inao Sharma and Kh. Oley Singh currently share the third slot with 4.5 points each.

N. Loken Singh registered a victory over Y. Dishen to move to four points.

Other players who have same margin of points include M. Rendra Singh, Rk. Lenin, L. Abungou Singh and Th. Poireinganba. Nine players, L. Yemen, Ph. Surjakanta, A. Sarat, S. Herojit, M. Sanatomba, T. Saheb, Th. Bijoy, N. Bangkim and N. Tolpishak have collected 3.5 points each. Y. Dishen, Th. Subash, Th. Jugeshor, L. Shyamkishore, Ronald Soibam, H. Naresh, W. Orison, S. Babulananda, M. Dolendro and Ch. Sunil Singh have three points each.

Grassroots Day: The All-Manipur Football Association observed the second AFC Grassroots Day at the artificial turf, Khuman Lampak sports complex, today. AMFA vice-presidents P. Raghumani Singh and Kh. Mohori Singh graced the occasion.

Volleyball: The New Athletic and Voluntary Youth Club is organising the first L. Girichandra Singh Memorial Sub-Junior Volleyball Tournament from May 25-30 at Iram Siphai, Imphal West.
