Disabled raped in Kokrajhar

Kokrajhar, May 14: A 20-year-old differently-abled girl was allegedly raped at Joypur under Kokrajhar police station last late evening.

According to police, the accused, identified as Debojit Barman, 30, took the girl to a betel orchard and allegedly raped her.

Sources said both were attending a wedding in the neighbourhood.

They are neighbours and also happen to be related.

The girl came crying and informed her parents about the incident and the villagers caught the accused and beat him up before handing him over to the police.

A case has been registered at Kokrajhar police station.

The girl’s father said she was suffering from speech impairment.

The youth has admitted to the crime and the girl has been sent for medical tests.

Various organisations have demanded punishment for the accused.

The All Koch-Rajbongshi Mahila Samittee (AKRMS) strongly condemned the incident and demanded appropriate punishment for the accused.

“The guilty should be punished and sent to jail,” said Usha Rani Ray, president of the AKRSU’s Kokrajhar district committee.

Incidents of rape have been on the rise in the state. Since 2011, Assam has reported over 1,700 rape cases every year and most of these cases were reported from the rural areas.
