Dhanbad, May 13: A 35-year-old teacher allegedly raped his 10-year-old student inside a toilet of a private boarding school in Dhanbad this morning, showing once again how vulnerable girl children are to sexual predators in positions of trust and authority.

Accused teacher Shaktipado Banerjee, Nutandih resident and employee of Awasiya Saraswati Vidya Mandir at Karmik Nagar, has been arrested and lodged at Sadar thana. The victim, a Class I student and day scholar, was transferred to the child helpline office in Jai Prakash Nagar.

Both were tested at PMCH. The reports are awaited.

DSP (law and order) Amit Kumar, who went to the school, said the accusation of rape, prima facie, seemed true.

“The girl had gone to the toilet. Banerjee followed her and bolted the toilet door. As she screamed, bringing other children and teachers to the spot, in nervousness, the man opened the door. Though medical reports are awaited, from the state of their clothes and preliminary evidence, it seems the crime had taken place,” Kumar said.

As news spread, the girl’s parents and residents came to the campus. Initially, Saraidhela thana was told. Saraidhela OC Renu Kumari said her team took the teacher into custody. “The girl looked terrified,” she said.

The girl and Banerjee were questioned separately.

Coeducational Awasiya Saraswati Vidya Mandir, which has classes from I to X, is affiliated to Jharkhand Academic Council.
