Mr President the biggest draw for ISM toppers
- Former students based outside the district turn up to receive gold medals from Pranab Mukherjee

It was a double special Saturday for 10 of the 1,106 former students of ISM-Dhanbad, who received their degrees at the 36th convocation of the premier mining cradle. First, they were honoured for topping in their respective streams. Second, they received gold medals from none other than the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee. A chat with four of the lucky 10

Sanchit Agarwal (22)

Stream: Five-year Integrated MTech (maths and computing). Also received the Best Student shield apart from the goal medal

Current status: Working with Samsung India

Proud Moment: “I worked very hard during my stay in ISM and expected good results. But I never knew that my hard work would get paid this way and I would receive my degree from the President. Pranab Mukherjee’s visit will help ISM get due recognition,” said Sanchit, who belongs to Uttar Pradesh

Amit Sinha (23)

Stream: BTech, environmental engineering

Current status: Pursuing masters in environmental science engineering at the University of Cincinnati, the US

Proud Moment: “I was supposed to take my vacation in December this year. But I chose to take leave from classes now for taking part in the convocation, especially after coming to know that the President of India would himself give me the award. I feel privileged,” said the resident of Patna

Nitin Bishnoi (22)

Stream: BTech, electronics and communication engineering. Received two other gold medals — the Nirja Sahay gold medal and the SBI gold medal

Current status: Working at LG, Bengaluru

Proud Moment: “I feel as if I am on cloud nine. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I would frame the picture of this great occasion so that the moment remains with me forever. As for ISM, it has developed a lot in terms of infrastructure,” said the youngster, who hails from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh

Y.A. Reddy (22)

Stream: BTech, mechanical engineering and mining machinery. Also received a SBI gold medal

Current status: The Hyderabad lad is working at Maruti Suzuki, Gurgaon

Proud Moment: “I had been waiting for this day ever since I came to know around a month ago that I will receive my degree from the President. The institute has undergone a lot of changes in the past year. The most prominent of them is bifurcation of my department into two wings — mechanical engineering and mining machinery. Our institute is no less than IITs — be it quality of teaching or infrastructure. We wish that it gets the IIT tag soon,” he said
