Varsity, police unite against bullies

The unruly students of Patna University have tough times ahead. Police and the varsity authorities have joined hands to rein them in.

The police have constituted three teams to arrest the students indulging in vandalism on the campus of late. Its members would conduct raids in their hometowns after procuring arrest warrants against them.

The varsity authorities, on the other hand, are procuring the names of the students figuring in multiple FIRs involving violence. They might be shown the door.

Y.C. Simahadri, the vice-chancellor of the Patna University, said: “Some students have been creating problems since long. We had talks with the police and collecting the names of the students figuring in FIRs lodged after violence on the campus. Once the list of the errant students is prepared, they would be summarily dismissed without any explanation.”

Simahadri was visibly upset over the assault of K.N. Paswan, the Patna University dean (students’ welfare), on April 29 at Iqbal Hostel, housing the students of the Patna College. He was equally cut-up with some students of Patna Law College, who attacked the Patna Science College chemistry teacher Randhir Kumar for not being able to resort to unfair means during the examinations.

Patna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Manu Maharaaj assured the varsity of all possible help to restore the order. He told The Telegraph on Thursday: “The recent incidents of violence in the colleges affiliated to the Patna University are a cause of worry. Around 12 persons have been named in the FIRs lodged in connection with the two recent incidents of violence on the campus. Three police teams have been constituted and its members would soon be going to Purnea, Gaya and Samastipur to arrest the named accused, hailing from these districts. The police have prayed to the court for their arrest warrants. Once they are procured, the teams will be on the move,” the senior officer said.

The varsity has decided to deal with unruly elements strictly in the future. “The university will lodge attempt to murder FIRs against students indulging in violence. Complaints of criminal trespass would be lodged against the outsiders entering the campus without any reason. In the near future, background of all the students taking admission to the colleges of the Patna University would be verified,” Simahadri, the varsity VC, said.
