Hazaribagh, May 6: The main accused in last evening’s Canary Hill rape and attack was arrested from his residence in the town this afternoon.
Mohammad Nawab (25) has been forwarded to Hazaribagh Central Jail along with his two aides — Devendra Yadav (18) and Sanjay Yadav (21) — who were nabbed from sadar hospital yesterday. A third person, Vinay Yadav (23), who the victim has not named in her statement to police but is believed to have been involved in the attack, is still at large.
The 20-year-old victim, a college student, was shifted to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi after her condition worsened last night.
Preliminary interrogation has revealed that Nawab made his living as a bus conductor. He manned the same long-distance vehicle that the 20-year-old undergraduate student of a town college took to travel between Hazaribagh and her native place in Dugda, Bokaro. In fact, her government schoolteacher father often sent clothes and food items to his daughter through one he thought was a trusted hand.
A friend of the girl said that the young couple became “good friends” over time and Nawab often visited the victim’s Krishnapuri lodge from Kheergaon, 3km away, where he stayed. They were also seen zooming around town on Nawab’s bike.
Yesterday, the bus conductor took the college student for marketing and treated her at a cafeteria before going to Canary Hill, where he raped her and allowed his friends to take their chance. In her desperate bid to thwart the gang attack, the victim jumped off the 375-feet-high hill. A patrolling officer found her trapped between rocks and trees 80ft above ground, and initiated rescue.
Hazaribagh Sadar OC Dayanand Azad said the victim, who had sustained grievous injuries during the fall, was being treated at RIMS. “According to a Supreme Court order, the victim’s statement is enough to treat a case as that of rape. Three have been arrested and sent to jail for yesterday’s attack. We are looking for one Vinay Yadav who has not been named but whose involvement in the attack cannot be discounted,” he added.
