Siliguri, May 5: The teacher-in-charge of Siliguri Hindi High School, Baisakhi Das, was gheraoed at the institution for three hours from 8am today by 17 contractual teachers who have not been paid their salaries since March.
The school management had increased the annual fees for the old students and the newly admitted students for the 2014-2015 academic session.
This led to protests by guardians as the school management had raised the fee by claiming that the institution had a minority status. The guardians have not been paying the hiked fees since January as the school does not figure in the list minority institutions in the country.
The school authorities said they are not able to pay the salaries as the guardians have not been paying the fees.
Bhagwati Prasad Dalmia, the secretary of the managing committee of the school, said: “The school is closed for summer holidays till May 31. The management will decide on the matter after the school reopens.”
