Effigy flames engulf protester

Dhubri, May 5: A protest against the BTAD blood-spill proved perilous when a protester in Dhubri district got engulfed in flames while burning effigies.

Montaz Ali, 42, was lighting effigies of Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi and BPF leaders Pramila Rani Brahma and Hagrama Mohilary along with other protesters at Lakhiganj PWD Road under Bilasipara subdivision around 11am when flames from the burning effigies suddenly leapt at him and his clothes caught fire. Soon the blaze engulfed him.

Ali, who suffered 25 per cent burn injuries, was shifted immediately to nearby Lakhiganj hospital. He was later referred to Dhubri civil hospital where the doctors said his condition was serious.

The protest was called by Muslim Sahitya Sashishata Parishad, Sadou Asom Goria Moria Jatio Parishod and Muslim Yuva Chatra Parishad with support of 30 other organisations.

The protesters shouted slogans and blocked the Bilasipara-Kokrajhar PWD Road.

They demanded an immediate end to violence in the BTAD and severe punishment for the culprits.

Lakhiganj is tense as it borders the BTAD.
