Hazaribagh, May 5: A young woman, fleeing after she was allegedly raped by the man she was seeing and attacked by his friends, fell off a hill near town and was found trapped between rocks and trees 80ft above ground this evening.
Two persons, one of them a teenager, have been arrested for attempted violation of the 20-year-old girl, a native of Bokaro studying in a Hazaribagh college for two years.
The main accused and one of his aides are absconding.
ASI (police control room) Mohammad Qamar Alam, who was patrolling the area around 5pm, was informed about the girl by three youths whom the girl later named as perpetrators.
“Three youths came running to me, saying a girl was hanging from the 375-feet-high Canary Hill. We rescued her. She was grievously injured and was barely able to speak. She said she was raped by one Mohammed Nawab, asked for some water and then passed out while we rushed her to sadar hospital,” Alam said.
He added that the girl managed to give the contact number of her father — a government schoolteacher in Dugda, Bokaro — before she lost consciousness.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the undergraduate student stayed in a lodge in the Krishnapuri neighbourhood of the town. According to her friends, she had befriended 25-year-old Nawab — a resident of neighbouring Kheergaon — a month ago. The couple was seen together on many occasions.
Nawab brought the girl to Canary Hill, a tourist hotspot, on a date and then forced himself on her. His friends — Devendra Yadav (18), Sanjay Yadav (21) and Vinay Yadav (23) — who had later attempted decoy by informing police attacked her soon after.
But, the girl managed to escape their clutches and jump off the hill.
Sadar police station OC Dayanand Azad, who recorded the victim’s statement, said Devendra and Sanjay were arrested from the hospital premises. “They were hanging around after bringing in the victim. They perhaps did not realise she would come to her senses so soon. One of them (Vinay) managed to flee,” the officer said.
ASI Alam added that it was a case of rape though a medical report was awaited.
“The girl is in shock, but out of danger despite serious injuries on various parts of her body apparently sustained during the fall.”
This is not the first bizarre crime against women in Hazaribagh town.
On April 19, the charred and naked body of a teenaged girl was recovered from a septic tank in the elite Hurhuru locality. Police are yet to establish the identity of the victim, let alone crack the case.
In August last year, another teenager was gang-raped in the Deepugarha area of the town. The incident had prompted residents to launch a massive agitation, leading to the arrest of all the culprits.
