Cuffs on robbers

Malda, May 4: Raiganj police have arrested five members of an inter-state gang of 40 armed robbers who had looted the house of a money lender in Milki in Englishbazar on Friday night.

“The robbery was committed from midnight on Friday till 1.30am. Himangshu Ghosh, along with his wife, two sons and daughters-in-law, were held at gunpoint by the robbers who were carrying improvised firearms. Ghosh’s 50-year-old wife Pratima was injured by shrapnel when the gang members burst bombs while fleeing. She is admitted to the Malda Medical College and Hospital,” said Malda police superintendent Rupesh Kumar.

“The members of the gang are from Jharkhand, Bihar and areas like Harishchandrapur, Old Malda and Englishbazar,” Kumar said.

Five men, including the driver of the private car they were fleeing in, were arrested by the Raiganj police on Saturday evening.

The Malda police superintendent said the Raiganj police had recovered 1kg and 810 grams of gold ornaments and Rs 7 lakh in cash.

According to the police, the five arrested men are, Akhtar Sheikh, Nalesh Bathani, Manoj Ghosh, Srimanta Karmakar and Sattar Ali, the driver. All of them are aged between 25 and 30 years.

They were produced in the court of the chief judicial magistrate here and remanded in police custody for five days.
