‘Crazy’ jail inmate kills prime accused in Khadim abduction case

Calcutta, May 5 (PTI): Happy Singh, one of the prime accused in the sensational 2001 abduction of the owner of Khadim Shoe Co, was killed on Monday inside the Presidency Jail by another inmate, police said.

Adhir Sharma, the additional director general in charge of Prisons, said Singh’s fellow inmate Nizam hit him repeatedly on the head with a brick.

Singh was first taken to the jail hospital where he was given five stitches, but was later shifted to the MR Bangur Hospital, where he died.

Singh was serving a life term in the Presidency Jail for abducting Khadim owner Partha Pratim Roy in 2001.

“The reason behind Nizam attacking Happy is still not known, but he is not mentally stable. Earlier on one occasion, Nizam had chopped off another inmate's ear. We are interrogating him,” Sharma said.
