Hailakandi, May 2: Police yesterday arrested a rape accused 22 years after he was charged with the crime.
Abdul Munim, 44, was one of the 12 accused in a rape case at Brahmansashan village under Nilambazar police station in Karimganj district in 1992. The accused were involved in the gang rape of two sisters at Brahmansashan, 15km from Karimganj, on August 1, 1992. They had also robbed their house.
Abdul Sukkur Laskar, officer-in-charge of Nilambazar police station, said acting on information that Munim was planning to go to Saudi Arabia via Bangladesh, the police arrested him in Karimganj. He was produced in the court of the district and sessions judge, Karimganj, yesterday and sent to 14-day judicial custody.
The district and sessions had sentenced all the 12 accused in 1997 to seven yearsí rigorous imprisonment. Munim challenged the judgment in Gauhati High Court on the grounds that he was a minor at that time. After three months in custody, the high court granted him bail.
The father of the victims subsequently filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court challenging Munimís plea. Karimganj police then submitted the document to prove Munim was 22 years old when he committed the crime.
In January, the Supreme Court upheld the 1997 judgment. After the apex courtís judgment, Munim absconded. He then secretly appealed to the Assam governor and the President for relief but his appeal was rejected. In February, the district and sessions judge ordered the police to arrest Munim.
