Calcutta: Subhas Bhowmick is back at the helm of Mohun Bagan as technical director.
The decision was taken on Tuesday after a meeting of club officials and the technical committee that comprises former players Sibaji Banerjee, Compton Dutta and Satyajit Chatterjee.
“The technical committee of Mohun Bagan nominated Subhash Bhowmick to be the Technical Director of the team for the 2014-2015 season. The technical committee will meet with Bhowmick soon to finalise the team for the next season,” a Bagan media release said.
The last time Bhowmick associated himself with Bagan was back during the latter parts of the 2010-11 season, when he replaced Stanley Rozario. Bagan had managed to finish sixth in the standings.
On this occasion, the illustrious coach comes in at a time when the club has nothing to show in its kitty for the last four years. And by Bhowmick’s own admission, he is a tad nervous on being given the role he has played with distinction.
“I’m proud of being back to Mohun Bagan, but a bit nervous as well. A club of the stature of Bagan plays to win trophies and for the last four years, it hasn’t won even one.
“So, my job will be to ensure trophies are back here. No doubt, it’s a huge challenge. I have to give more than 100 per cent to make a turnaround,” Bhowmick said.
For Bhowmick, the emphasis will be on building a squad, which is a blend of youth and experience.
“I’ve seen quite a few matches of Bagan in the recently-concluded season. What I’ve perceived is that the youngsters in the squad are quite capable. There’s quality.
“A little bit of experience will do wonders for them. I’ll sit with the club officials and members of the technical committee to make a strong squad, which will be a mix of youth and experience,” he explained.
