Was a good toss to lose: Dhoni

Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said it was a good toss to lose as unexpected dew played a major role in their five-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad, in Sharjah, on Sunday.

“I think the game really changed once they changed the ball. There was some movement on offer with the new ball until it got wet again because of the dew… Had we won the toss, we would have batted first as well and faced the same problems. So, it was a good toss to lose,” said Dhoni at the post-match presentation.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni: I think the game really changed once they changed the ball. There was some movement on offer with the new ball until it got wet again because of the dew.

On this wicket, I think the runs they have put up was decent, but not above par. Moreover, our bowlers bowled really well whereas their bowlers couldn’t execute their plans properly because of the dew.

Had we won the toss, we would have batted first as well and faced the same problems. So, it was a good toss to lose.

Overall we are playing good cricket. Everyone is contributing to the team though not everyone in our top seven has been tested. Our openers, however, are doing a great job. The bowlers are also performing as a unit.

Shikhar Dhawan: We never knew that dew was going to come tonight. The ball got wet and our spinners could not grip it. It was coming nicely on to the bat and that did help the Super Kings’ batsmen to play their shots.

In the first innings, the wicket and the ground were dry and the ball was stopping on to the batsman. So, it was a bit difficult for the batsmen. We were planning to get somewhere around 150 on this wicket. But, we couldn’t apprehend that there could be dew. At the same time, I am not going to take the credit away from them. They batted really well.

Dwayne Smith (MoM): My plan today was to stay calm and be positive and not worry about anything. I am a positive batsman, and that reflects in my batting.

As an opener, I try to score as many runs as possible so that the job becomes easy for the batsmen coming in later. We have very good guys in CSK, very good staff and it’s a brilliant team.

I have a minor problem with my knee, but I am not worried about it. The physio is doing a great job looking after me.
