Difficult to pick Tambe: Shane

Rajasthan Royals captain Shane Watson termed Pravin Tambe as a “skilful, cagey bowler” after the 42-year-old leg-spinner took four wickets for 20 runs to cap the Royals’ incredible bowling performance that restricted the Royal Challengers Bangalore to a paltry 70. The Royals then romped to a six-wicket victory.

“Tambe is very skilful and reads the batsman’s mind very well. He is a very cagey bowler,” said Watson at the post-match presentation.

Excerpts

Shane Watson: It was a great way for us to bounce back after that loss against Chennai Super Kings in our last match. It was very disappointing for us and we are happy to end the UAE leg with a win. It feels nice to walk away with a win. I am sure everyone in the team is really happy.

Tambe has been an exceptional bowler for us in the last season and it’s good to see him bowl well in this edition as well. He is very skilful and reads the batsman’s mind very well. He is a very cagey bowler. I play him a lot at the nets and he is very difficult to pick. Also, the wicket we played on today was slightly drier than the one where we played last time, and a bit two-paced too.

Credit must also go to our opening bowlers. Stuart Binny was really tight at the start of the innings. The bowlers kept up the pressure on the batsmen, and it worked for us.

As far as our batting is concerned, Ajinkya Rahane has given us good starts all along and he is a fine cricketer and so is Sanju Samson.

Virat Kohli: The match got over too soon for us. It looks like we didn’t arrive at the field today! We kept losing wickets in almost every over. It’s hard to see that in a T20 game and it really makes the game look ugly. They bowled really well, so credit to them.

The pressure created on us by the Royals bowlers was extended over a long time. Stroke-making becomes difficult in such a scenario and that’s what happened. When you lose a wicket every over, it compounds the pressure. Otherwise, it was a good wicket to bat on… I felt that when I was batting. It’s just that we didn’t play well.

It was one of those days that we need to forget quickly. Hopefully, we will come back stronger in the next part of the tournament.

Pravin Tambe (MoM): I love bowling and that’s an honest confession. The wicket was also on the slower side. I bowled a lot of googlies today, mostly to the left-handers. I bowl them to the left-handers in my side a lot at the nets. It worked for me today.

Sometimes I bowl from 23 yards as well. This is something that I worked hard on at the nets. I do this to alter the length a bit and do something different. This keeps the batsmen guessing.

Kane Richardson: It's just one of those days in T20 when things go your way and it snowballs from there. To get two wickets in the first over with one run-out was a bonus. There were some poor shots from the opponent batsmen… But we are not going to complain about that. When you are chasing 71, you expect to win the game… Going four down and winning it make us happy.

I think the wicket was a bit slow. In the game, between Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab, both teams scored 200-plus. Today, it was much different, but still the new ball came on to the bat pretty well as it showed when we batted. For RCB, after being four down, it was hard to come back into the game.
