Abuse act to shield children

Patna, April 26: Legal experts discussed the issue of child sexual abuse and the implementation of the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act, 2012, at a two-day workshop today.

The workshop, jointly organised by the Bihar Judicial Academy, Unicef Bihar and Chanakya National Law University, was inaugurated by Patna High Court Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah.

Amanullah said: In 2007, the ministry of women and child development reported that 53.22 per cent of children sampled from across 13 states had faced sexual abuse. Most cases go unreported because of fear of ostracism, reflecting the failure of the justice system and is corroborated by the dismal rate of conviction.

He added that implementation of the act requires participation of all stakeholders in building up a support structure. Bihar Unicef chief Yamin Mazumdar said National Crime Record Bureau reported 8,541 cases of child rape in the country in 2012.
