Rushmi is in the dark about Fed Cup squad

Calcutta: Strange it may appear, but the India junior Fed Cup coach-and-captain Rushmi Chakravarthi is still in the dark about the squad that would be participating in the competition. The tournament begins on May 5, in Kuching (Malaysia).

The preparatory camp got underway Thursday at the BTA courts. But Rushmi has not yet been given the final list of players who would travel to Malaysia.

Asked who among the girls could be the standout player, Rushmi remarked: “I cannot comment on this matter. I’m yet to get the (final) list of players for the competition.”

Earlier, Pranjala Yadapalli, Karman Kaur Thandi, Ojasvinee Singh and Vanshika Sawhney were named as members of the squad. Ojasvinee and Vanshika haven’t arrived in the first place, as according to a BTA spokesperson, the duo are unlikely to be part of the squad.

Speaking further about Rushmi not being given the final list of players yet, the BTA spokesperson added: “The All India Tennis Association (AITA) wants to avoid all controversies related to the rankings. It doesn’t want Rushmi to be in an uncomfortable position at the captain’s meeting. Maybe that’s the reason it hasn’t yet finalised the list.

“Pranjala is the top-ranked among India under-16 girls, but Karman has a higher ITF ranking. So, the AITA has to sort this issue out first. Probably that’s why the delay. The normal trend, though, is to select the country’s top three in the rankings.”
