Tenant cries assault

A young, single and ailing mother filed a complaint with the East Singhbhum SSP’s office on Wednesday, alleging assault and intimidation by her landlord and refusal of Telco police to lodge her FIR.

While SSP Amol V. Homkar said he was yet to see the appeal since it was a holiday, police have outright denied that the complainant came to thana.

Issica Ghosh (28) has been living with her eight-year-old daughter and 50-year-old mother at 601 B-Block, Shamsher Tower, Kharangajhar, a flat owned by Tata Motors employee Debashish Das, for a year.

In her complaint, the woman, who has two damaged kidneys, said that Das and his wife Nandita wanted to sell the flat and were pestering them to leave despite promising to let them stay for three years. On Tuesday, the couple and their hired goons allegedly barged in, showered abuses, assaulted the two women and threatened to abduct the child.

“I have always paid the rent of Rs 4,500, besides electricity and maintenance charges. How can they just throw us out?” Ghosh said, adding that she had been made to sign a “blank judicial paper” a year ago.

“They offered to sell me the flat for Rs 9 lakh, of which they asked me to pay half in advance. I gave Rs 1 lakh and promised the rest after registration formalities. Around 20 days ago, they asked me to vacate the flat immediately,” the complainant claimed.

She further said that Telco police refused to take action. OC Kamlesh Pandey said: “We can receive a case and lodge an FIR only if the complainant comes to the police station.”

The SSP said it was Veer Kunwar Jayanti and he had not gone to office. “I will look into it tomorrow (Thursday).”

Das could not be contacted.
