New Delhi: A senior official of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) was arrested in Varanasi on Tuesday, after a complaint of alleged sexual harassment was lodged against him by a woman footballer in Uttar Pradesh.
Mohammed Shamsuddin, the accused, is the secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Football Sangh and an executive committee member of the AIFF. He is also the vice chairman of the AIFF finance committee.
“The official has been arrested after a woman footballer based in Meerut lodged a complaint with the police against him, alleging sexual harassment during the state team selection camp,” said an official of the federation.
“The girl’s statement has been recorded by the magistrate under Section 164 of the IPC on Monday and a case was lodged under Sections 342 and 354,” he added.
Sources said an official of the UP sports directorate, Shamim Ahmad, has been placed under suspension for allegedly taking the girl to Shamsuddin’s residence on Sunday morning on the pretext of ensuring that she got selected to the state squad.
The girl later alleged that the official made advances of a unwanted physical nature after Ahmed left.
AIFF is organising the women’s national championship after a gap of three years. The tournament will be played in Assam from April 27 to May 13.
