Athletics team heads to Haridwar

East Singhbhum District Athletics Association is hoping for a better medal show at the 12th national inter-district meet to be held from April 25 to 28, as the home team started its journey for Haridwar on Tuesday.

Coach Shyam Kumar Sharma and manager Jahanara Begum are accompanying the outfit. The 13-member squad consists of Under-16 and Under-14 boys and girls.

The team was announced by joint secretary of the district body Ravindra Murmu on Monday.

The squad has 11 boys and only two girls.

Among the boys are Ranjit Sindho and Aakash Kumar Singh (javelin), Prasun Das and Anil Mardi (100m), Suraj Sardar (200m), Anuj Arjun Sandil (600m), Lakhiram Hembrom (1000m), Aditya Singh (100m hurdles), Amit Chatar and Sudil Murmu (high jump) and Nitin Kumar Sharma (long jump).

Reena Soren (200m) and Pushplata Murmu (long jump) are the only two girls to have found places in the squad.

Last year, the district team bagged only two medals (a gold and a silver), but this time they are confident of a better show.

The squad that headed for Haridwar was selected on the basis of the player performances at a district meet held at Sumant Moolgaonkar Stadium in Telco.

“We are confident to come up with an improved show in Haridwar. Our confidence stems from the fact that the athletes performed very well in the district meet held at Sumant Moolgaonkar Stadium recently. Some of the athletes have bettered their timings, too. Hence, we are positive about the upcoming championship,” said joint secretary of the district body Ravindra Murmu.

He added that the association had conducted training at Telco where the 13 athletes got a golden chance to rectify their flaws under experienced coaches.

“This will also have a bearing on their performances in Haridwar,” said the joint secretary of the district body.
