Calcutta: Bengaluru FC etched their names in the annals of Indian football on Monday as they defeated Dempo SC 4-2 to claim the I-League title in their debut season.
To put it simply, Bengaluru FC have been the most consistent team in the I-League and deserved to win the title. But the task wasn’t an easy one. The key to Bengaluru’s success has been their team game.
Leading Bengaluru’s campaign from the front was Sunil Chetri. Not only has he been inspiring his teammates with brilliant performances, he is also the joint-highest scorer (with Lajong’s Cornell Glen) in the competition so far with 14 goals.
Chetri, who scored Bengaluru’s fourth goal on Monday, termed the triumph as one of the most “significant moments” of his illustrious career.
“There are very few moments in my career that will match the significance of this one. It’s been a team effort since day one… That’s the key to our success. We’ve fought hard, trained harder and none of us are surprised that we are here today. If anything, we are delighted. This team is going to go down in history,” Chetri said.
Needing a win to snatch the title ahead of other established teams, Bengaluru led from start to finish against Dempo. The performance made coach Ashley Westwood happy.
“I just want to congratulate and thank everybody connected to the club who has made this possible. We have shown what can be achieved with a combined team effort. The credit goes to the team.
“I just hope everybody realises how big an achievement this has been for a brand new club and I would also like to say a special thanks to the fans who made Bangalore a special place to play for all of us,” Westwood said.
