Goalpara, April 20: The president of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Badruddin Ajmal, today said the Congress would not win a single seat in Assam because of corruption committed by the ruling party while implementing different schemes.
Attending an election rally at Goalpara under Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency, Ajmal said the Congress in Assam was not in favour of the downtrodden and was working for the capitalists.
“I am sure that the Assam Congress will not able to win a single seat in Assam. The people of Assam understand that the Congress cannot fulfil the needs of common people. So, for your security I request you to cast your votes in favour of the candidate of the AIUDF,” Ajmal said.
Dhubri is a minority-dominated constituency where their votes play a deciding factor in every election. The constituency comprises 10 Assembly constituencies where seven are in Dhubri district and three in Goalpara district. Ajmal, who had won from the constituency in 2009, however, is facing flak from many in the constituency and many here allege that he has done nothing for Goalpara district.
“Most of the voters of Dhubri constituency are from Dhubri district. So no candidate cares for Goalpara. They think that without the support of the people of Goalpara they can win elections. Therefore, after winning as an MP they never think of Goalpara. This is the reason why Goalpara remains backward. During the last five years, Ajmal sahab has done nothing for Goalpara,” said Ramakanta Baruah, a writer of Goalpara.
Congress candidate Wazed Ali Choudhury claimed that he would win the seat. Talking to reporters, he criticised Ajmal saying he was a religious and not a political leader.
