Affair & suicide spur bid on life

A 28-year-old man sustained serious injuries when a group of five men attacked him with knives at Devnagar in Sitaramdera police station area on Sunday morning.

Victim Zakir Hussain, who has an iron-scrap business, has been admitted to MGM Medical College and Hospital with wounds on his head, shoulders, throat, nose and limbs.

The incident is a sequel to a suicide over a failed extra-marital affair.

Hussain, who is married to one Fatima Begum (25) for the last two years and has a one-year-old son, was having an illicit relationship with his neighbour Anita Devi (25) after her husband left her a couple of months ago.

According to sources, Anita had been pressing Hussain to marry her. When refused, Anita hanged herself at her Devnagar house on April 8.

Sunday’s incident took place around 9am when Hussain left his house for his iron-scrap depot in Bhuiyandih. Deceased Anita’s 23-year-old brother Raju Sharma ganged up with four others to attack Hussain. The assailants first thrashed him and then Raju stabbed him repeatedly. The men fled the spot after Hussain collapsed.

Later, local residents rushed Hussain to MGM Medical College and Hospital where police recorded his statement.

Sitaramdera OC Sushil Kumar Chowdhury confirmed the incident, adding that Raju and the others were absconding. “Hussain had an extra-marital affair with Anita Devi, who committed suicide 12 days ago. Though we are yet to get her post-mortem report, preliminary probe suggests that Anita and Hussain had recently developed an affair and the woman wanted to marry him. Being rejected, Anita committed suicide,” said Chowdhury.

According to the officer-in-charge, neighbours also confirmed a link between Hussain’s refusal to marry Anita and her suicide. “Her brother who came to know about the affair after his sister hanged herself, ganged up with local youths and attacked Hussain,” he said.

Chowdhury, however, added that in his statement to police Hussain did not mention anything about his affair, but confirmed that he was attacked by Raju and others.
