Mother ‘punched’ over boy affair

A 45-year-old cancer victim was allegedly thrashed by a Jamshedpur transporter on Thursday evening because her son eloped with his daughter earlier this month.

Kiran Singh lodged an FIR with Olidih police against Ramesh Pandey and his five associates before fleeing home with her indisposed husband, fearing further reprisal, on Friday morning.

According to her lawyer Ranjana Srivastava, the antagonised father of an adult daughter barged into the ailing woman’s Silsila Chowk residence in Olidih along with his goons around 6pm and punched her in the nose and chest.

“She has breast cancer, but was shown no mercy. Her tenants were attacked too when they tried to save her. Ramesh Pandey also threatened her with dire consequences if her son did not bring back his daughter,” the lawyer alleged.

A tenant, unwilling to be named, said Singh’s husband was bedridden and her assailants took advantage of that. “She was thrashed mercilessly,” he said.

Srivastava further alleged that Olidih police did not register an assault case. “When Kiran asked the OC to give her a copy of the FIR, the latter refused. The transporter has clout and we suspect that a proper case has not been registered,” she said.

Olidih OC Sushma Kumari claimed Pandey had only threatened Singh and had not assaulted her. “That was what was mentioned in the FIR. Hence, I will register a case under Section 107 of the CrPC against both parties.”

According to the lawyer, the young couple eloped on April 6. “Though the girl is a Class XII student, she is an adult. In fact, she had submitted a letter with Olidih and Mango police, mentioning her affair and saying she had the right to choose her partner,” Srivastava said.

She also added that the boy would not have run away with her had the girl not pressured him by making a suicide bid recently.
