Calcutta: Vijay Zol certainly falls among the best at the under-19 level.
Splendid showings not just helped him secure a place in the Maharashtra side, but also won him an IPL berth. His figures so far at the first-class and List A matches are pretty impressive, but his stint in Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) colours could well go on to determine whether Zol is ready to be on the big stage.
The two-time finalists feature match-winners in captain Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle and Yuvraj. But it’s South Africa captain AB de Villiers whom Zol is in awe of. “For me, AB is Mr Cricket. He can do everything.
“He can keep (wickets), field as a tiger and bat in any situation. That is the kind of a mindset I would like to take from him,” the 19-year-old was quoted as saying by iplt20.com.
Having said that, Kohli’s energy and aggression, along with Yuvraj’s big hits and aggressive cricket, too, are things Zol feels he needs to pick up. Asked about Gayle, Zol’s instant response was “fearless”.
The destructive West Indian opener’s fearlessness is also an aspect that Zol thinks he has to learn in order to excel further.
