Raiganj, April 14: The North Dinajpur district magistrate issued a show-cause notice on the president of the district bar association last night for violating the model code of conduct because he praised former Congress MP of Raiganj, Priya Ranjan Das Munshi, at a government programme.
A poll panel source, however, said: “A lawyer praising a political personality, who does not hold a political or government post, at a government event is not a violation. If the platform was used for campaign for a party, then there could be some considerations.”
Bar association president Naba Kumar Roy, a former Congress MLA from Kaliaganj in North Dinajpur, has been asked to respond in three days.
On Saturday, Roy attended the inauguration of a Lok Adalat Bhavan on the district court premises here along with high court judge Justice Asim Kumar Banerjee, district judge Ananya Banerjee, DM Smita Pandey and others.
When Roy’s turn to speak came, he addressed Justice Banerjee and said: “Milord, it is due to Priyada (Priya Ranjan Das Munshi) that you have been able to travel to Raiganj in comfort. Earlier, high court judges had to travel by train to Malda and then come here by road. It was due to Priyada’s efforts that we have got a direct train to Calcutta.”
DM Pandey told the district judge to stop Roy from making such comments. The judge spoke to Roy and he ended the speech soon. Pandey said: “A show-cause notice has been issued to Roy for violating the model code. He has been asked to reply in three days.”
Roy said: “My comments did not have political connotation. I will reply to the letter.”
