Malda, April 12: The Election Commission has transferred the inspector in charge of a Malda police station for flouting the model code of conduct by allegedly inviting a Trinamul leader to inaugurate a women’s helpdesk at the police station.
Babin Mukherjee, the inspector in charge of Harishchandrapur police station, was allegedly present when local Mahila Trinamul president Madhumita Roy inaugurated the helpdesk on March 11, after the Lok Sabha elections had been announced.
The Malda CPM filed a complaint with the poll panel against Mukherjee, who has been transferred to the district missing persons cell.
Malda police superintendent Rupesh Kumar said Mukherjee had been handed the transfer order. “The inspector in charge of Harishchandrapur has been transferred to the district missing persons cell,” Kumar said.
Mukherjee refused comment, saying he had “heard about my transfer”.
CPM district secretary Ambar Mitra said: “We are glad that the EC has taken cognisance of our complaint.”
The CPM today wrote to the poll panel challenging an order issued by chief secretary Sanjay Mitra that says eight officials transferred by the commission would be reinstated after the Lok Sabha polls.
