Tezpur, April 11: An NDFB (Songbijit) militant was killed in an encounter with Assam Rifles and Assam police this morning at Asraibari, under Mazbat police station in Udalguri district.
Mazbat is about 80km from Tezpur and 20km from Asraibari, where the encounter took place.
Sonitpur and Udalguri police from the state conducted the joint operation.
Police sources said a group of eight militants were taking shelter at Asraibari when the security forces raided the village.
Sonitpur superintendent of police Sanjukta Parasor said the cadre has been identified as Dabla, and a huge cache of arms and ammunition along with some incriminating documents and a Nepal passport were recovered from him.
Earlier, at the same place where today’s encounter took place, the Assam Rifles team had fired twice on militants. The militant group had set up camp on the Arunachal side for a long time and security forces have been monitoring its activities. Operations are continuing against the militant group in various parts of Sonitpur district.
Between February and March, two top-ranked militant leaders were killed in different encounters with Assam police.
A self-styled deputy commander (southern command) of NDFB (S) B.Thaijou alias Kamaram Brahma, 29, with a Rs 3-lakh bounty on his head, was killed in an encounter in the Makrijhora-Malatijhora area in Parbhatjora subdivision of Kokrajhar district on February 20.
Another leader, G. Bigrai, who was the commander of the eastern zone, was also killed in an encounter at Balisang under Biswanath Chariali police station on February 23.
