Bengal minister’s son-in-law, 3 others, arrested for assault on EC staff

Malda (WB), Apr 11 (PTI) : West Bengal Police on Friday arrested the four persons, including the son-in-law of a minister, accused of beating up Election Commission personnel in Malda's Manikchak area on Thursday.

The Malda district administration had lodged two cases at the Manikchak police station on Thursday after being directed by the Election Commission to take immediate action.

Apart from Samadip Sarkar, son in law of minister Sabitri Mitra, the other arrested persons are Motiur Rehman, Muklesur Rehman and Jamal Khan.

While Samadip and Motiur were arrested from Malda town's Rathbari area, Muklesur and Jamal were nabbed from Rabindra Avenue, Malda’s police chief Rupesh Kumar said.

On Thursday, two persons were arrested although they were not mentioned in the first information report, the superintendent of police said.

They were produced on Friday in court of the chief judicial magistrate, which remanded them in two days' police custody.

A four-member team of EC personnel were videographing a motorcycle rally of Trinamool Congress workers when activists thrashed two of them, provoking the election authority to ask the district administration to take stern action.

Motorbike rallies are banned under rules framed by the Election Commission.
