The state government on Tuesday announced that the tenure of the interim vice-chancellor of Jadavpur University, Abhijit Chakrabarti, has been extended by six months or till a full-term VC is appointed, whichever is earlier.
Chakrabarti’s tenure was to end on April 28. He assumed charge on November 28 following the resignation of full-term VC Souvik Bhattacharyya.
The process of appointing a full-term VC has not begun as the state government is yet to choose its nominee to the three-member search panel.
A higher education department official said the government’s nominee could not be finalised as the model code of conduct is in force.
“Hence, the extension of Chakrabarti’s tenure till October 28 or the appointment of a full-term VC, whichever is earlier,” the official said.
JU registrar Pradip Ghosh said the university has received the order.
Governor M.K. Narayanan, the chancellor of the university, and the court, JU’s highest decision-making body, have decided their nominees.
The chancellor has nominated R. Chidambaram, the principal scientific adviser to the government of India, to the search panel, and the university court, economist Sugata Marjit. “We are committed to completing the search by October 28,” said an official.
Government sources said the order for setting up the search committee would be issued after May 16.
