Nagaon emerge champions

Guwahati, April 7: Nagaon annexed the Elite Group title of the Nuruddin Ahmed Trophy Senior Inter-District Cricket Tournament by virtue of their first innings lead against hosts Guwahati at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium here today.

Resuming their second innings from an overnight score of 56 for one, Guwahati were 200 for five in 94 overs till both the captains agreed to call it a day before playing the mandatory overs. On Sunday, Nagaon had piled up 395 runs in reply to Guwahati’s first innings total of 295 runs.

Overnight batsman Rahul Hazarika, who was at the crease with 15 runs in his kitty yesterday, went on to score 50 runs off 162 deliveries which included four hits to the fence. Sunzow Brahma who was batting on 31 runs, failed to convert his start as he fell for 36 runs off 54 balls. Rohit Sharma scored 34 runs off 89 balls which featured four boundaries while Biplab Saikia chipped in with 30 runs off 64 deliveries with three boundaries.

Prahlad Gayan (10) and Sujay Tarafdar (11) were at the crease when both the captains decided to call it the end before the start of the mandatory overs.

Ashok Saini, Mrinmoy Dutta, Debojit Baruah and Hokaito Zhimomi picked up one wicket each for Nagaon.
