Houses damaged in hailstorm

Shillong, April 4: A hailstorm, accompanied by heavy rain, hit several villages under Betasing block in Meghalaya’s South West Garo Hills district last night. Houses and crops were damaged.

The villages worst hit by the hailstorm include Dorambokgre, Jewilgre and Bolgamgre. A few houses were damaged other villages. A state government official said over 90 per cent households of these villages had their corrugated iron roofs completely damaged. In Dorambokgre village, the CGI roof of a school building, which will be used as a polling station in the Lok Sabha elections, was fully damaged. Betasing block development officer A.G. Momin, who rushed to the spot, directed the gram sevaks to go to these villages and assess the extent of damage for necessary relief measures. This afternoon, massive hailstones also hit Shillong and its adjoining areas. It was not immediately known whether any damage had occurred. People ran helter-skelter in search of shelter from the sudden storm.

The streets turned white and traffic was impacted.
