Soren, Nishikant file nominations

Ranchi/Dhanbad, March 31: JMM patriarch and seven-time MP Shibu Soren today filed his nomination papers for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, seeking to reinstate his claim on Dumka constituency that, along with Rajmahal, Godda and Dhanbad, will go to the polls on April 24.

Sitting BJP MP Nishikant Dubey from Godda and Trinamul Congress nominee Chandra Shekhar Dubey from Dhanbad were among others who filed their nominations today.

Senior Soren, accompanied by chief minister son Hemant Soren, went to the Dumka deputy commissioner around 11am to complete the formality. State finance minister and Congress leader Rajendra Prasad Singh and RJD’s tourism minister Suresh Paswan were also present to extend their parties’ support.

Soren won the Dumka seat in 1880, 1989, 1991, 1996, 2002 (bypolls), 2004 and 2009, riding on tribal support. However, the election this year, by his own admission, is going to be a do-or-die battle.

Fighting him will be his two former disciples — BJP’s Sunil Soren and JVM supremo Babulal Marandi, who enjoy a strong support base in the Santhal Pargana region.

And Soren has not forgotten Marandi, a BJP candidate then, had defeated him in the 1998 elections and his wife Rupi Soren in 1999. Marandi is likely to file his nomination papers on April 4.

Moreover, though Soren officially enjoys “full support” of the Congress and RJD this time, dissension among workers of the three parties may benefit the Opposition.

The JMM demurs, obviously. “The face of Santhal Pargana changed during Shibu-Hemant rule. With the support of Congress and RJD, his victory is certain,” said JMM central committee member Supriyo Bhattacharya.

In Godda, BJP’s sitting MP Nishikant Dubey submitted his nomination papers at the deputy commissioner’s office around 2pm, accompanied by former chief minister Arjun Munda and former deputy chief minister Raghuvar Das.

Faced with a multi-cornered contest from Congress’s Furkan Ansari, JVM’s Pradip Yadav and former IPS officer and Ajsu nominee Subodh Prasad, Dubey is mainly banking on the “good work” he has done in the past five years.

In Dhanbad, former Congress minister and TMC candidate Chandra Shekhar alias Dadai Dubey filed his nomination papers.

Accompanied by three Bengal ministers Malay Ghatak, Rakshpal Singh and Shanti Ram Mahto, Dubey led a rally of over 500 supporters to the district collectorate’s office around 1.30pm.

Among others, BJP’s sitting MP P.N. Singh, Congress’s Ajay Dubey, Samresh Singh of JVM and Ajsu nominee Hemlata S. Mohan are in the fray.

No nomination was filed for the Rajmahal seat today.
