Calcutta, March 31: BSP chief Mayawati today justified fielding candidates in all 42 seats of Bengal despite knowing “they won’t win”, saying she did not want her “three to four per cent voters” to support another party.
“Let me justify why we have fielded candidates for cent per cent seats in Bengal despite knowing that they won’t win. We have three to four per cent voters in Bengal. Who will these people vote for if there is no BSP candidate,” she said at a party meeting on the Shahid Minar grounds. “We don’t want these people to vote for other parties.”
The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister wrapped up the meeting in 45 minutes and left for Lucknow.
In 2009, the BSP had fielded candidates in 41 of the 42 seats. All of them lost.
