Khunti bank trio released, cash held

Ranchi, March 30: Khunti police late last night released the three bank employees, after detaining them for some hours for carrying Rs 20 lakh in a car in violation of the model code of conduct.

Khunti subdivision officer (SDO) Khunti Mahimapat Rai today said: “After verification, we found the employees of the cooperative bank were speaking the truth, which is why we released them.”

However, the Rs 20 lakh has been kept in Khunti treasury.

SDO Rai added that even if the money belonged to the bank, it could not send it without giving prior intimation to the administration. “As per the Election Commission’s directive, any one carrying more than Rs 50,000 cash must inform the administration about the same,” Rai explained.

Yesterday, police intercepted a car, which was on its way to Torpa from Ranchi, from Kalimati and detained the three persons with Rs 20 lakh in cash.

The three — Sambhu Nath Karmakar, Haradhan Mahto and Prakash Bharti — claimed they were employees of Ranchi-Khunti Central Co-operative Bank and that the money belonged to the bank.

While Karmakar identified himself as a manager, Mahto claimed he was a guard and Bharti a cashier. But, as they could not produce any document to establish their claims, the police detained them.

“On the basis of their statements, a showcause has been slapped on the bank, asking it authorities to submit their reply by tomorrow,” Rai said.

The money would be handed over only after the bank submits its reply.
