Agartala, March 29: Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar, who has emerged as the face of the CPM across the country, is set for campaigning in Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Varanasi in UP. He will campaign not only for his party’s candidates but also for those of alliance partners.
Sources in the CPM here said the chief minister’s campaign programme in other states is final and he will start touring, having completed his commitments in Tripura. “In Tripura, we are in a solid position but the same cannot be said about other states where the CPM has put up candidates. He is in demand for campaigns wherever we have our candidates,” said Haripada Das, CPM office secretary.
Das said the chief minister has already addressed 25 election rallies in West Tripura (general) constituency and his programme for the East Tripura (ST) seat will commence from tomorrow after the last date for withdrawal of nominations is over.
Both Shankar Prasad Dutta, CPM candidate for West Tripura and Jiten Chowdhury, contender for East Tripura, are well placed and tipped to easily win their seats. “The chief minister’s campaign in East Tripura will aim at further consolidating the party’s solid support base among the predominantly indigenous section of voters. Our candidate and former minister Jiten Chowdhury will be with the chief minister in all the rallies,” said Das. He added that the chief minister’s first three rallies in East Tripura constituency would be held at Ambassa, Kanchanpur and Dharmanagar.
Despite the CPM’s public stand of maintaining equidistance from both the Congress and the BJP, this is the first election where the CPM leadership, including the chief minister, has been training their guns on the BJP, never really a force to reckon with in the state.
At a meeting held yesterday here, Sarkar charged the RSS with the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. “BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is sponsored by the RSS which is responsible for the assassination of Gandhi,” Sarkar said. He will visit Varanasi to campaign for CPM candidate Hiralal Yadav against Narendra Modi.
“His programme for Varanasi has not yet been finalised but he will go to campaign for our candidate and highlight the CPM’s stand namely on the BJP and Narendra Modi,” said Das.
