Sunny chance excites Arjuna

Calcutta: World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga, who has served as chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket, is excited at the prospect of Sunil Gavaskar being made interim president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Late on Thursday, Ranatunga, a member of Parliament, sent a message to The Telegraph.

Excerpts from Ranatunga’s message...

“I believe cricketers who have played for their country with pride, passion and dignity would never allow this great game to be destroyed and their country’s image disgraced...

“If Sunil does become the interim president, I’d expect him to make use of this opportunity and help resurrect the respect lost by the BCCI...

“Sunil comes from an era where representing one’s country was the ultimate objective and commercial aspects were never a consideration in the cricketers’ minds...

“I’m hopeful that Sunil will, in the ICC, represent the matters of all cricket-playing nations and help offer a level-playing field to every country, based on performance rather than revenues.”

Ranatunga has never been a fan of the IPL and isn’t comfortable when the BCCI throws its weight around.
