Minor raped, youth held

Malda, March 26: A 16-year-old physically-challenged girl returning home from a friend’s house was allegedly lured to a sugar cane field and raped by a youth in an Englishbazar village yesterday evening.

Tapas Mondol, 20, was arrested last night and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days today.

Police said the victim was hearing-impaired and suffering from polio on the right leg. “She had gone to a friend’s home while returning from school around 4pm and spent sometime there. The school is about 3km away from her home. Around 6.30pm, the girl was going home when she was stopped by Mondol,” said a police source. Mondol managed to lure her inside a sugar cane field where he allegedly raped her. Some local people spotted the unemployed youth sneaking out of the field and became suspicious. “They went inside the field and found the girl lying on the ground. Her clothes were torn and she was groaning. The local people informed the girl’s parents and she was admitted to the Malda Medical College and Hospital. There, the girl wrote on a piece of paper that Mondol had raped her,” said the source.

The girl’s father, a daily labourer, lodged a complaint with Englishbazar police, naming Mondol. The police said angry villagers had gone to Mondol’s house to thrash him but he had already been taken into police custody by then.

Dilip Karmakar, the inspector-in-charge of the Englishbazar police station, said a case of rape had been filed against the arrested youth. “Mondol, aged about 20, has been arrested and is accused of raping a physically-challenged 16-year-old girl,” he said.
