Tips on treatment for knees & joints

Orthopaedic surgeons from across the country talked about injuries and timely treatments available on the concluding day of the two-day conference organised by Central Zone of Indian Orthopaedic Association on Sunday.

Amitabh Mukherjee, an orthopaedic surgeon from Calcutta, talked about treatments available for arthritis patients who have been diagnosed in the early stage of their disease.

“These days, an injection is given to arthritis patients who have diagnosed early. A gel-like fluid called hyaluronic acid is injected into the knee joint. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the synovial (joint) fluid. It acts as a lubricant to enable bones to move smoothly over each other and as a shock absorber for joint loads. People with osteoarthritis have a lower than normal concentration of hyaluronic acid in their joints. The injection containing hyaluronic acid may be a therapeutic option for individuals with osteoarthritis of the knee,” said Mukherjee at the conference, themed on “neglected trauma”.

Conference chairman and orthopaedic surgeon Amulya Kumar Singh talked about the knee and joint injuries caused by the neglect of doctors and patients. “People should not neglect knee and joint injuries because if they neglect injuries they would become more dangerous and would become-non-treatable at the end. Many a time, neglects could be seen on the part of doctors while in most of the cases there is a neglect on the part of patients and their relatives in few cases.”

Singh added: “What usually happens that a patient continues with home treatments after his/her injury and sometimes they even consult traditional bone setters who do not provide treatment in scientific methods. The patient visits the orthopaedic surgeon’s clinic only after when his/her condition has deteriorated a lot. In some cases, the neglect is done on the part of doctors who do not avail latest treatments to patients rather they give treatments to patients on conventional methods which does not help to recover the patient soon,” said Singh.

Singh and other surgeons also talked about knee transplant and its various aspects.

Singh added that residents need not to visit metro cities for knee transplants any more as it’s available in Patna. “The aim of this conference was to make people aware about the things they need to do in case of bone and joint related problems,” said Singh.
