Dhaka/Calcutta: Though Mahendra Singh Dhoni was all praise for Man of the Match Amit Mishra on Friday, the Team India captain felt that the leggie has so far delivered only 70 to 75 per cent of his potential.
Mishra, on his part, acknowledged the support he got from Dhoni.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni: It would have been a perfect win but we dropped a few catches… It would have been much better had we caught those... But I felt that with the crowd in the background, the fielders in the deep found it slightly difficult to spot the ball. That would be the only reason for missing the catches.
Apart from that, it was a fantastic game. Shikhar (Dhawan) and Rohit (Sharma) started off really well. Even though it was a low-scoring game, it was important to get off to a good start.
(Suresh) Raina is someone who backs himself to play the big shots. At the same time, it is important to take calculated risks. I feel in a format like this, you need to plan your innings, play the ball according to its merit, see the field settings and the areas you can hit.
I think he is doing all these things really well. It’s good to see him among runs. With him around, it gives us the kind of firepower that’s really needed in the middle order. With him being a left-hander, the job becomes more difficult for the bowlers.
It is too early to talk about the team combination. If there is already too much dew just before the start of the game, then it becomes difficult for the spinners. That’s when we would need to make the call on whether to play the extra spinner or not. Amit Mishra has bowled really well. Still, I feel his impact has only been 70-75 per cent. But with the way he bowled, I believe he will gain in confidence and will put up a better performance in the coming matches. He would not be shy now to toss the ball up and lure the batsman to go for the big shots.
Mohammed Hafeez: The pitch was a little damp. The ball was not coming on to the bat. We were thinking of putting up a total of around 150. Unfortunately, we couldn’t reach there. Then we dropped quite a few catches. In a low-scoring match, you need to take them. I know people will talk about losing to India again in a World Cup match but all that is history… Next time we will try and break the jinx.
Amit Mishra: There was a bit of turn in the track and I tried to use it to my advantage… My focus has always been to give my 100 per cent whenever I’m playing. I’m really glad that I could contribute to the team’s success.
Even when I wasn’t getting many matches to play, I always stayed positive... I’m always thinking of taking wickets… I don’t just look to restrict the batsmen from scoring runs. I believe if you are taking wickets, you automatically build up pressure...
Dhoni gave me a lot of support today. He said ‘bowl whatever you want and just let me know what you want’… Those are very comforting words. That’s exactly what a bowler wants from his captain.
Any victory against Pakistan is special… I’m happy that I performed well and had a part to play in the victory… Last time I did well against Pakistan (in the Asia Cup), but the team lost.
