Dhubri, March 21: Dhubri district returning officer and deputy commissioner Kumud Chandra Kalita today ordered an inquiry into the alleged distribution of money during a Congress party meeting at Srimanta Sankardev Sishu Udyan yesterday.
Dhubri district Congress president Sushil Chandra Roy was allegedly seen distributing money among party workers. When the election code of conduct cell was informed of the matter, an inquiry was initiated by the district election officer, an official source said.
When contacted by The Telegraph, Kalita said he had ordered Dhubri additional deputy commissioner and election officer Mohen Saikia to inquire into the alleged “distribution of money” among the party workers in the party meeting in Dhubri and submit his report within 48 hours.
“I will see the report and take action accordingly,” Kalita added.
The president of Dhubri district Congress, Sushil Chandra Roy, while refuting the allegation said he had not distributed any money among the party workers for the sake of votes.
“It was a district party workers’ meeting and since most of party workers came from far-flung areas of the district to attend the meeting by hiring vehicles, I was just paying fuel bills and fares to the workers against the number of the vehicles they hired. So, where did I pay the voters or bribe them?” Roy asked.
He also said the party candidate had not even filed his nomination yet and under the circumstances, this sort of allegations were totally baseless.
Besides, district-level Congress leaders and party candidate Wazed Ali Choudhury were also present in the meeting, a party source said.
Dhubri poll notification will come into effect on March 29.
The last date for submission of nomination is April 5 and scrutiny of nomination is on April 7. Dhubri will go on poll on April 24.
