Leaders file papers

Jorhat, March 19: Congress Jorhat MP and former Union minister B.K. Handique today filed his nomination to deputy commissioner S.V. Vasant, who is the returning officer of the constituency. CPI candidate Dhrupad Borgohain, who is a former Rajya Sabha MP from the state and a former MLA of Nazira seat in Sivasagar district, arrived from Sivasagar to file his nomination papers.

Senior AGP leader and former minister Pradip Hazarika, who arrived here from Amguri (in Sivasagar district), also filed his nomination. Traffic was severely disrupted on AT Road for three hours from 11.30am because of the leaders were accompanied by party workers and supporters. Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s son Gaurav submitted his nomination papers for the Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency as a Congress candidate to Nagaon deputy commissioner P. Ashok Babu.

BPF protest

Kokrajhar: The BPF workers and supporters on Wednesday burnt the effigy of Tezpur Lok Sabha Congress candidate Bhupen Kumar Borah for allegedly holding BPF president and BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary “responsible” for the 2012 riots in lower Assam. Borah, however, complained that he received phone calls threatening to kill him. Three Congress leaders’ lives, including his, are under threat, he added.


Imphal: Returning officer of Inner Manipur constituency, K. Radhakumar Singh, on Wednesday issued a notice for election of the Inner seat. The last date of filing nomination is March 26, scrutiny March 27, last date of withdrawal is March 29 and polling is on April 17.


Jorhat: Chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday addressed a poll rally at Rajiv Gandhi play ground. He sought blessings for his son Gaurav at Atkhelia namghar in Golaghat district.


Kokrajhar: Deputy commissioner Nitin Khade on Wednesday said the district administration was making adequate preparation for free and fair election.


Guwahati: The Kamrup (metro) district administration has undertaken training for master trainers ahead of the elections.

EVM check

Guwahati: The first phase of EVM randomisation was conducted on Wednesday at the Kamrup (metro) district commissioner’s conference hall here.
