Clampdown on illegal tollbooths

Shillong, March 18: The North Garo Hills district administration has dismantled and closed down illegal tollgates, parking lots, check-gates and weighbridges operating along National Highway-62 ahead of the April 9 Lok Sabha polls.

According to deputy commissioner W. Khyllep, 11 such illegal tollgates, parking lots, check-gates and weighbridges operating along the highway within the jurisdiction of North Garo Hills have either been dismantled or closed down.

The action came after learning that such tollgates, parking lots, check-gates and weighbridges were collecting money from vehicles, Khyllep said. Police have also been asked to maintain a strict vigil along the highway where hundreds of trucks ply on a daily basis.

National Highway 62 is a 132km stretch from Damra in Assam to Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills district.

The highway has come under the scanner on numerous occasions as truckers allege that various groups are collecting large sums of money from illegal tollgates.
