Country-made guns and ammunition have been seized from two men arrested in Kaikhali.
Police raided an area near Kaikhali bus stop on VIP Road on Saturday night following a tip-off and arrested Vivekananda Majumder, 46, and Alok Sarkar, 32, both residents of Bongaon in North 24-Parganas.
“They were carrying 10 country-made 7mm pistols, 20 magazines and 20 bullets. The guns were made in Munger and could fetch close to Rs 20,000 each in black market,” said an officer.
“The men used to work as carriers. They would receive guns and ammunition from someone from Munger and smuggle them to Bangladesh through the Bongaon border,” said an officer of New Town police station.
The officer added Majumder and Sarkar have criminal records. “Majumder has six cases of arms dealing pending against him. Sarkar had been charged under the narcotics act.”
According to officers, the duo said during interrogation that they had brought the arms from Munger and were tasked to smuggle them to Bangladesh. The cops are also trying to find out whether the arms were meant to be used during the Lok Sabha polls.
The men were produced in a Barrackpore court on Sunday and remanded in police custody for a week.
