Midnapore, March 17: Will he? Won’t he?

Trinamul workers in West Midnapore’s Ghatal are eager to meet their star candidate Dev, but are unsure of his presence in a party rally tomorrow.

District Trinamul leaders complained that the state leadership was not telling them anything specific about the actor’s participation. “Every time we asked the state leaders about Dev’s participation at Tuesday’s meeting, they told us they were trying to get him,” said Dinen Roy, the district Trinamul president.

The Trinamul leader added the meeting was supposed to take place on Wednesday, but was brought forward by a day on instruction from the state leadership about five days ago.

Along with Dev, actress Sandhya Roy, the Trinamul candidate for the Midnapore seat, is expected to attend the workers’ meeting at Aurobinda Stadium at Midnapore town tomorrow. The party is distributing 15,000 passes for the event.

Sources said the two Trinamul leaders with whom the district leadership was keeping in touch about Dev’s participation tomorrow were all-India general secretary Mukul Roy and state party president Subrata Bakshi.

Contacted, Bakshi refused to divulge much. “I don’t want to say anything on this. If they (Dev and Roy) go, you will be able to see them,” Bakshi told The Telegraph this evening.

Sources said Dev is scheduled to shoot for Yoddha, directed by Raj Chakraborty and produced by Shree Venkatesh Films, in Chandrakona, around 26km from Ghatal, from Tuesday morning till afternoon. After the pack-up of shoot for the reincarnation drama, he will slip into the role of a Lok Sabha aspirant and attend the Trinamul party workers’ meeting later in the day.

Whether he comes or not, party workers are not willing to take a chance. A scramble has begun for the 15,000-odd cards Trinamul has printed for entry to the stadium.

A Trinamul zilla parishad functionary from nearby Sabang, Amulya Maity, said: “I have got only 300 cards for the Sabang block. I am having a tough time distribution the cards as all are pleading with me to give them passes. We are taking all these steps but we haven’t been told clearly whether Dev will be there at the stadium. If the actor doesn’t turn up, our party workers will be very disappointed.”

A police officer said that anticipating Dev’s visit, about 2,000 policemen have been given the duty to guard and monitor the stadium area.

A senior Trinamul leader said: “This workers’ meeting covers both the Ghatal and Midnapore constituencies. Altogether 14 Assembly constituencies have to be covered. So, cards are being distributed among 14,000 party workers who would be playing the most important role in the campaign for the candidates in their respective constituencies. The remaining 1,000 will be distributed among district-level leaders.”
