3 HNLC cadres arrested

Shillong, March 14: Three alleged cadres of the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), who were on their way to Bangladesh via the Mawsynram border, were arrested from two vehicles on the outskirts of the state capital today.

Based on intelligence inputs, some youths who hadjoined the HNLC were bound for the border to cross over to Bangladesh.

Police intercepted two Sumo vehicles at 7th Mile in Upper Shillong, East Khasi hills superintendent of police M. Kharkrang said.

After questioning all the passengers, Kharkrang said three persons were identified as HNLC cadres.

The trio will be booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, he said.

They have been identified as Toni Roy Pale, 28, from Kyrdem, Shanbor Maring, 19 and Kyrshan Khyriem, 28, from Mawtnum village under Ri Bhoi district.

According to Kharkrang, the trio, who are school dropouts, had already joined the HNLC and were on their way to the neighbouring country.

Kharkrang said the police are keeping vigil on the border areas under Mawsynram police station, and they will take all legal action available against persons joining a banned organisation.

Recently, there were reports that Khasi Studentsí Union vice-president Frederick Kharmawphlang and 13 others had joined the proscribed outfit.

The publicity secretary of the Jaintia Studentsí Movement Sambormi Lyngdoh was also reported to have left the group to join hands with the HNLC.
